Maestro is a Fast 42 and was built by Bill Tyler of Fast Yachts in Durban. Maestro was completed in December 2004.
Her maiden voyage almost ended in tragedy. Ankie Roux, Paul van Ass and Bill Tyler left Durban to deliver Maestro to her home at RCYC in Cape Town on 9th December 2004, and hit a container on 14th December off Cape Agulhas at 00h15. The crew were very lucky to have survived and it was a miracle in itself that Maestro did not sink.
The result that was the whole interior was ruined and she sustained major damage to the interior and exterior and six months was spent almost rebuilding her on the hard at RCYC and preparing her to be more than capable for the South Atlantic Yacht Race.
She completed the race in early 2008.
Since her return from Bahia she has been based at RCYC as part of the IRC Racing Fleet and is skippered by Paul van Ass.
Paul van Ass is the helmsman and skipper of Maestro. He is 54 years old. Paul was an avid Hobie sailor for many years and has also spent many years racing and sailing with Ankie Roux at RCYC on yachts from L26’s to Holiday 34’s and for the last few years, on Maestro.
Paul completed the 2005 Mauritius to Durban Race on Fast 42 Zeus and also the Cape to Bahia on Maestro in 2006.
