Warlock is an L26, the One Design selected to be used in the Lipton Challenge Cup. Originally known as Equation, she has been campaigned in the Lipton Challenge Cup for the past three year by the current owner, Ian Slatem. The first two years as a development of the Diocesan College Yacht Club (DCYC) keelboat sailing effort who now have the use of JML1 at RCYC. In 2008 Parasailor WARLOCK campaigned for sponsors ’Electron’ and ‘Parasailor SA’ realising an 11 position. Her crew assembles for Lipton at WP Champs the week before as a tuning event, then return for the week of Lipton Challenge Cup.
WARLOCK sails in as many of the regattas and races she can out of RCYC, including the Mykonos Race and other local offshore races. Her crew is a collection of usually young people being introduced to sailing, some having never sailed before, to some former dingy Springboks and National Champions. Availability determines who is on board. Roles on board are a musical chair affair as we swop roles for the most experienced person to do the necessary at times, and use this flexible role system as an opportunity to expose and train new sailors to a small racing boat in action. As our core team develops so our position in this competitive fleet will improve until she is performing to expectations. Therein lies our challenge. Hopefully a new competitive crew will emerge for our future Lipton Challenges.
WARLOCK lives in the sea and sails with antifouling (VC Offshore) so she isn’t as polished as many of the L26 hulls, but this allows her to sail whenever the opportunity arises, with an instant’s notice.
